2) Metro Tickets and Fares

Metro Fares in Istanbul are fairly cheap considering the quality and convenience of the system. If you are a tourist, it would be logical for you to buy a pass card since it can be used as a ticket for all kinds of public transportation in Istanbul such as metro, buses, trams and ferries across the Bosphorus. Prices of the IstanbulCard are as shown below. However some ferry and bus lines might charge you more than 1 pass  if the line travels to a distant location.

  • 1 Pass Card: 5 ₺
  • 2 Passes Card: 8 ₺
  • 3 Passes Card: 11 ₺
  • 5 Passes Card: 17 ₺
  • 10 Passes Card: 32 ₺

3) Main Metro Lines for Sightseeing

If you are in Istanbul more just a couple of days, you will be more likely to see main touristic areas. Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with the main metro, tram and ferry lines. Since the main touristic areas are located closely to each other, getting around in Istanbul via public transportation is very easy. Below public transportation lines are the main and most optimal methods of transportation in Istanbul:

T1 Kabatas-Bagcilar Tram Line

Istanbul Tram Line Cheap Public TransportationT1 tram line is one of the most useful public transportation lines for those who would like to visit main tourist destinations because it travels through historic peninsula of Istanbul. By using this line you can reach Kabataş, Karaköy, Eminönü, Sirkeci,Sultanahmet and Beyazıt districts. Most of the historic monuments, shopping bazaars and museums are located in these districts. You can also use T1 tram line to transfer other metro lines or ferry ports.

M1A Yenikapi-Ataturk Airport Metro Line

M1A Metro Line is the first metro line built in Istanbul. It connects the historic peninsula of Istanbul to the Atatürk International Airport. You can also reach the Coach Terminal Station via M1A metro line.

Marmaray

Marmaray is a partially operational transportation project in Istanbul which connects the European and Asian sides of the city via a rail tunnel under the Bosphorus. Currently phase 1 of the project is operational and connects 2 continents via 5 stations; Ayrılık Çeşmesi and Üsküdar in the Asian side and Sirkeci, Yenikapı and Kazlıçeşme in European side. If you would like to reach the other side of the city, Marmaray is a faster alternative for the ferries which are operating from Sirkeci, Eminönü, Üsküdar and Kadıköy.

Istanbul Tram Line Cheap Public TransportationIf you would like travel from the old and historic part of Istanbul to the new and modern one, M2 metro line is the most convenient choice fo you. You can reach the business and financial centers of the city such as Taksim Square, Maslak, Levent, Şişli and Mecidiyeköy via M2 line. Famous shopping malls such as Zorlu Center, Cevahir, Kanyon and İstinye Park are also accessible via M2 metro line.

4) Useful Tips

  • For your own comfort, avoid travelling via public transportation during rush hours (weekdays, 7-9am and 5.30-7pm).
  • Be aware of your personal belongings and keep your valuables such as wallets, cell phones and other expensive belongings close to your body
  • Familiarize yourself with the map of Istanbul and main transportation routes.
